“Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough”
ON APRIL FOOLS’ DAY, AMID A MOURNFUL ATMOSPHERE and signals that the trial was not going well, the media was outside the courtroom interviewing Michael’s fans, who seemed to have mixed feelings about what the future held for the pop star. Many were angry that former accusers were going to be dragged into the current proceedings, certain that the testimony about prior allegations would create more unnecessary prejudice against Michael.
Fans were furious. They felt Michael was being targeted by the court, that he was being treated unfairly. Tired of seeing him being lambasted by the media every day, some of Michael’s fans were afraid that the superstar was going to be worn down. Many were convinced that a prison sentence would be the end of the superstar.
People became melodramatic. They speculated that if convicted, Michael would die in a prison cell. Tom Mesereau also agreed with that sentiment, later confiding that he treated the trial as if it were a death penalty case. Mesereau felt strongly that Jackson would wind up dead if he was sent to prison.
The thousands of Michael’s supporters who made the trip to Santa Maria felt that they were a necessary part of Jackson’s fight. Even if the mainstream media tended to ignore them, tended to try to dismiss their significance, fans knew they had a rightful place. Fans made sure their voices were heard, and they kept the media buzzing about Michael’s innocence. Some fans were convinced about a conspiracy—and they held up signs that pointed the finger at Sony.
Each day, in Michael’s presence, some fans would weep, others would chant. People wanted to tell Michael they loved him and wanted to be near him in any way possible. Fans would wake up every day and stand outside the courthouse at 6:00 AM, waiting out in the cold, in the rain—whatever it took—to land a public seat inside the courtroom.
The fans who were lucky enough to get inside were always interested to hear the twist the media put on things. The witnesses would say one thing, and the media reported only slices of what was coming from the witness stand, none of which supported Jackson. Fans were impressed by the American justice system, but more than anything, they hated the media, who they felt, unequivocally, had sided with the prosecution.
It was on April Fools’ Day that an important piece of the puzzle would be revealed. The reported $20 million settlement with Jordie Chandler came under scrutiny as the high-powered attorney, Larry Feldman, made his way into the courtroom to testify. To courtroom observers, Feldman seemed like a demigod. The man had an air of superiority about him that was palpable. Dressed impeccably, standing tall, with a look of money dripping from every pocket, Feldman was asked to tell the jury about his academic preparation, noting that he was number one in his class at Loyola Law School, stating that he’d been in practice as an attorney since 1969.
